Back To School for All Ages

August 17, 2018

Although it’s been years since the last time I started a new school year, that doesn’t stop me from using the back-to-school shopping season to spice up the tried and true looks I’ve been wearing all summer. The best way to approach a new school year is with positivity and optimism, and having that same outlook towards refreshing your closet is key. Your first stop? Your local Style Encore boutique for those unique and dynamic secondhand pieces that will help your autumn wardrobe rule the school…or at least a scholarly mindset.

Tee & Backpack

Back in high school, I was inspired to develop my personal style within the guidelines of a casual dress code. I would let my current favorite song or a favorite movie character inspire my look from day to day, and since my music and film tastes have matured, I can still use this idea to pull myself out of a fashion rut. Pair a striped tee with a floral skirt if you’re feeling preppy, or a suede jacket with flared jeans if you’re feeling your best 70s self. Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence—your teenage self would have!

Although my college years may have started out ambitiously, by winter quarter I was tempted to live in leggings and a sweatshirt. Thankfully, these days, turning athletic wear into daywear is more than acceptable, and finding pieces like a pair of look-at-me boots or a statement tote bag in which to carry your workday or weekend essentials will keep you feeling fresh. And don’t forget to pick up a signature pair of sunglasses…you’re still looking at a bright future.

Blazer, Denim & Flats

Even though graduation day may be a distant memory, decades later, you can easily incorporate academia into your work wardrobe. Swap out your black and navy for a checked or tartan blazer. Leave your ballet flats in the closet and lace up a scholarly pair of oxfords or brogues. These iconic schoolgirl chic looks ensure your outfit is office appropriate with a youthful spin. You’re never too old to let a back-to-school mindset inspire you to be true to your school.
